Hi Danny, found you during Covid and wanted to say thank you for inspiring me to keep going as I just took up drawing again in mid 40’s. I struggle with routine due to health but your essays are that gentle nudge saying I’m here don’t forget to start…thank you🫶
This explains a lot to me. Since I no longer have daily responsibilities and thought I loved having no routine, I find I am procrastinating every thing: life really 😳. Decisions have become harder. I need, now more than ever to put in place some of these ideas inside a simple routine! Thank you once again Danny 🩷
re: being a little OCD...my first professor in grad school said, "it's functional to be more than a little compulsive in order to get through grad school". To keep up your schedule, ya kinda need to be. Wow, every other year a book!
I am the very model of a major general's daughter (apologies to Gilbert and Sullivan). I think that is why, although I consider myself to be a free spirit, I too adore a regular practice. This is the first year in seven that I've not done inktober. I might do it in November. Not being on Instagram makes it less compulsive. Two uniforms come to mind - Picasso's striped top and baggy pants and Bill Cunningham with his black sneakers, and blue workman's jacket. I think uniforms and routines (9 coffee beans, a special chair) cue our psyche that it is time to create.
Home from Paris I need to register my own routines.
Every Friday morning, 6am, coffee brewing, open the blinds, get comfortable and read Danny’s Essays, draw or write for an hour plus and it’s the beginning of my weekend. I genuinely look forward to it. Thank you for sharing your words. Tom
Danny, your essays always impact me in a meaningful way. Even if they seem simple at first - describing a writer who orders a chocolate shake everyday at 2:30 - the message they carry is simply profound and provides a creative spark. Thank you for sharing your creativity and routine, it makes the world a better place. (From your pal who also attend Lahore American School).
Your essay reminds me of the book, Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Currey. He writes about the the daily routines of over 150 creative people—writers, painters, and music. I’ve tried to figure out the secret but it seems that everyone has something different to practice their craft. Love reading about this stuff— thanks for sharing your rituals.
This was one of your best essays! Thanks!

"And what if it's wrong? So be it." made me stop breathing for a second, love this. Thank you for writing it.
I love this essay, Danny. Thank you!
Love this! I can hear your voice as I read. Good advice for us creatives. 😊

I'm glad it seems helpful. But dintbhver do it. Try adding just one new habit/routine and then build on it.

You are enormously productive, Jan, as a writer and artist. I'm not surprised that some sort of routine underpins it.

That book is wonderful!
James Gurney and Thomas Kinkade also wore uniforms when they went out sketching together. I think Gurney still does.
I love their book, recently rereleased.
