I am an all time fan of the Stones. Absolutely. In Barbados, I found Mick at the suitcase turnstile, with his nanny. Likely headed to Mustique or beyond. It was life changing for me. I stood next to him for a while, just to see what that was like. It was really fun. My husband took a picture of us together from a distance, incognito. He looked ordinary. A bit pale, pastie and wearing nondescript clothes. I think folks were used to seeing him pass through this tiny airport . It was 1987. My daughter was three. We were flying home from a couple weeks in St Vincent, where my husband taught a course in psychiatry to a group of foreign medical students. I had an adventurous life. I was young. I was happy. And healthy. Oh the years have changed much of that. I came back with an autograph. I even got shake his hand and I treasured all of that. I saved the pen he touched. Oh I loved the Stones, especially Mick Jagger. As sordid their lives may have been they are one of the greatest rock and roll bands ever ! I honor your love for the Stones. My autograph was damaged and faded by rain in Hawaii. But it’s still here with me in Florida now. Isn’t life grand? So fortunate to have choices, ability to explore the planet. Just one of my many crazy
Thanks for your wonderful storytelling! I spent the 80’s in Brooklyn, in what is now Dumbo. This brought back some lovely memories. Today, I’m a Beatles fan, back then we roamed the clubs on the lower east side to hear live music.
Hi Danny. I LOVED this essay! You've told me a great story while I enjoyed my coffee and I'm grateful as always.
When Pink Floyd played Montreal during the Animals tour, one of the city newspapers printed a tiny photo of a hotel lobby where the band was "possibly" staying. Some friends (unfortunately, I didn't go), skipped school and took a bus downtown. They rode the elevator of the hotel in breathless hope, then got the quickest glimpse of David Gilmour in a Speedo before he ran away.
Danny, On retirement and in my 70’s I have more time to listen to music. I’ve rediscovered the Bee Gees, the (Cdn) Guess Who, the Eagles and especially Led Zeppelin (Stairway to Heaven By Wilson Sisters!).
Wonderful essay! I love the Beatles. Was just a tad too young to really get into them at a young age but I really started loving them after going to an event in the Louisville area called Abbey Road on the River. All sorts of bands from all countries have come to this festival and it's all Beatles music from Thurs through Monday of Memorial Day Weekend. They usually get someone from that time period to come as a special highlight, not necessarily Beatles related. Two of the best ones were Vanilla Fudge (Carmine was still playing the *** out of the drums!) and Tommy James, his Mony Mony was perfect that night. It's been going on in this area since 2005. It is now across the River in Jeffersonville Indiana which is the side I live on. This festival brings people of all ages together, lots of peace and love.
Thx for the little taste of the City and the days when there were crumpled flyers. And for the days when we were always looking to have a way in to some Secret. I guess that whole left-hand thing was a trick the Stones played on Jeremy.
I don't really like the Stones; I prefer listening to the Beatles. But anyway, taste is always a very personal, sometimes an inexplicable thing, isn't it? However, I only really like the Beatles with John Lennon. I also like his solo albums, including the ones with Yoko Ono.The later Beatles moved more towards the mainstream, while the Stones remained more true to themselves, at least in my opinion. Well, your text has prompted me to think about this more consciously, thank you... Best regards, Sabine
I was a huge Stones fan in the '80s. I saw them in concert during their Tattoo You tour.
I like people who don't allow age be an obstacle to what they love to do.
